Good divorce lawyer in NYC? ostia: OK, I decided to file for divorce over a month ago, but haven't dealt with it yet...so now I am trying to get started.
I've spoken to a couple of lawyers on the phone, and one sounded decent, but they were all asking at least $2,000 plus court fees to handle my divorce, which will be about as simple as a divorce can get: we have no children and no joint property, and it will be uncontested.
Can anyone who's gotten divorced in New York City tell me if that is the standard lawyer's fee for a simple divorce? Also, would any of you recommend the lawyer you used?
Thanks for any feedback, as always....
Re:Good divorce lawyer in NYC? niceguy: I can't say for NYC, but my divorce circumstances are similar to yours. No kids, everything uncontested. We ran into the same thing $2000 in attonery fees on top of court fees. I live in CT and at least here you can file everything yourself. It's just a matter of filing out a bunch of forms. They actually have a booklet you can get from the court house that tells you everything you need to do. Also they have people available to help you fill out the forms if you have questions. you may want to check and see if you can do the same in NY.
It was a bit of running around and at times I didn't want to deal with my X, but in the end it worked out pretty well.
Hope this helped a little
