REVIEW: The Grudge brokenman: As scary movies go, this one delivered on creepiness. Where it fails to deliver is in the ending. Suffice it to say, scary movies make it to the big screen for only one reason... releasing part 2 next year. While leaving a story open for a sequel is not unexpected or bad, this movie makes no attempt at subtety.
The cinematography is brilliant. The storyline is as plausible as possible for a ghost story. The acting is good enough to keep your mind on the characters instead of the actors themselves. And the "scariness" is a product of special-effects, mood, and suspense. I don't recall the movie ever resorting to quiet scene-loud noise tactics.
While I saw this movie with a small audience, the reaction was good. The people were chilled and spooked. A few audible gasps were heard throughout the feature. And at the end, we all stood before the credits to file out muttering, "that ending sucked" in unison.
My recommendation, if you like scary pictures, see this movie. However, leave 8 minutes early and just keep in mind that there will be a sequel. The ending doesn't matter.
My score:
Without the ending - ***
With the ending - **
